What you can expect to find at the Salvage Barn:

Old house parts, vintage light fixtures, claw foot tubs, rim locks, plinth blocks, cedar siding, reclaimed flooring, and more! The Barn is the home to materials salvaged from old buildings and homes, at least 50 years old that no longer exist. These parts have been gathered together so that there is a source for old house or building owners to find historically appropriate materials for the repair or restoration of their property.

Why does the Salvage Barn exist?

Friends of Historic Preservation run the Salvage Barn as a service for the City of Iowa City. Working the Historic Preservation Commission, FHP encourages the owners of historic homes to repair and maintain their homes according to the Secretary of Interior’s guidelines. The Salvage Barn supports this effort by making materials available at reasonable prices.

Have a donation?

We will be pleased to review your treasures. Unfortunately, our space is limited, so we do reserve the right to decline donations.

Old house salvages are our specialty.

Members of Friends of Historic Preservation, along with the Salvage Barn staff, volunteer to help salvage. Usually, salvage dates are organized for a weekend.
All members are covered by the FHP blanket liability insurance policy.
Experienced members work along side enthusiastic newcomers to ensure that the materials are removed properly.

By recycling old house parts through the Salvage Barn, tons of material are diverted from the landfill and recycling is being supported.

In exchange for allowing FHP to salvage a property, the owner receives an itemized list of materials removed. This list can then be appraised and submitted along with their taxes as a donation to a non-profit organization.

To schedule salvage, please email salvagebarn@ic-fhp.org or call 319-341-9889.

Where is the Salvage Barn located?

The Barn is at the Iowa City Landfill. It’s the red metal building to the north of the recycling center parking lot.

To get to the Iowa City Landfill, head west on Melrose Avenue about two miles and turn left at Hebl Avenue. (Look for the landfill sign.) You can see the Salvage Barn building as you drive down Hebl Avenue, it's the building closest to the landfill entrance.
